The New Toilet Block Takes Shape
Wellington House circa
1883 [Article: Ref Harrington Earl]
... was built by former Acting Premier of Victoria,
George David Langridge, a man who forged a career in Victorian
politics and championed the cause of the working classes, having
started as a carpenter, then moving to the goldfields to try his
luck. After Mr Langridge's deat in 1891, the property was occupied
by Edgar Wilkins, MLA and Mayor of Collingwood. In 1923, the property became a
convent to the Sisters of
Charity, with a foundation stone commemorating its opening
by Archbishop Mannix. The most recent residents were the Emmaus
Community. This faded gem is in need of substantial renovation. Its grand entry
opens to two spectacularly large and interconnecting
drawing rooms. Upstairs has seven rooms. There is a coachman's
cottage/stable at the rear.
